How to choose an embroidered piece online

A practical checklist for looking beyond the first photograph and choosing a garment you will enjoy wearing.

Read the details before the mood

Good product photography helps you imagine a piece, but the written details help you decide whether it will work for you. Before choosing by color or occasion, check the garment measurements, fabric composition, lining, closure and what is included in the order. If a measurement is not listed, contact the store before purchasing.

Fabric names can cover a range of weights and finishes. A photograph cannot reliably tell you how a fabric will feel against the skin, how much it drapes, or how sheer it may be. Use the composition and garment notes together, and ask for clarification when an important detail is missing.

  • Compare the garment’s measurements with a similar item you already own.
  • Check whether the listing describes lining, transparency and stretch.
  • Look for clear close-ups of embroidery and construction.
  • Read delivery, exchange and return terms before placing the order.

Think about how you will wear it

A piece earns its place when it fits your real wardrobe. Think about the shoes, layers and accessories you already reach for. Consider whether you want a statement garment for a particular event or a quieter piece that can be styled in several ways. Both are good choices when they suit your needs.

For a relaxed fit, use the garment measurements rather than relying only on the size label. If you are between sizes or the silhouette is unfamiliar, ask the store how the garment is intended to fit. Do not assume that sizing is consistent across brands or garment types.

Look for information you can trust

A useful listing separates confirmed product facts from inspiration. Material, dimensions and care guidance should refer to the item itself. Maker, place-of-origin and handwork claims should be included only when they have been checked. This gives you a more honest basis for deciding and gives the people behind the work more accurate credit.
